In this project, I created a big poster inspired by street artists (Banksy, Swoon, etc.)

My artwork answers this question since it tells a story about how some people cannot be who they are and feel lonely at night. I chose this issue since many people are experiencing this during pandemics, without being able to see others in real life. I wanted my audience to understand the pain people might be experiencing and be kind to each other. I made the girl on the poster cry, to affect audiences’ emotions and raise awareness about the issue. I made butterfly collages to make them stand out in the darkness, to tell audiences how there are still hopes no matter how bad the situation is. This idea helped me communicate with the audience and was inspired by swoon since she uses collages for her artwork as well. I was also inspired by Banksy to use black and white as the main color of my poster, to create a dark atmosphere. In my opinion, I succeeded to design the poster and tell the story about it. I am satisfied with the result I got. However, there are some improvements I could make. For example, while painting, I accidentally colored over the girl in the picture. The next time, I will be more careful when coloring. In addition, I will take more time when I create another artwork. Since I did not have a long time to finish the poster, I had to rush and could not put my maximum effort into it. Therefore, when making a poster next time, I will consider these points and become a better artist.

This is the draft of my poster. In my first plan, I used different colors, such as yellow, pink, blue but it was changed on the final poster since I wanted to create a dark atmosphere, to affect individuals’ emotions more. Moreover, my artwork was largely inspired by Banksy, and he usually only uses bright colors in small parts, so I wanted to do it in a similar way. In addition, first, I was planning to make the theme of the art “loneliness”, but it was changed since I wanted to create a specific situation and stronger message so individuals can enjoy the background story more and relate to it.

This is the process picture of my collages, which are butterflies. I made collages of them to represent “Hope”. when you look at the whole poster, you can see how there are colorless (black-white) butterflies trapped near the girl’s heart. By drawing them, I wanted to represent how the girl was not being able to speak up about her emotions and had to fake her personality, which made her true emotion which is represented as butterflies become colorless. In contrast to that, I made the collages bright to hide a message that one day, she will be able to show true herself to someone, like the colorful butterflies flying to the bright moon in the dark sky.

This is the process photo I took while drawing small details. I drew the mask to represent how the girl has a fake personality, but is tired of it and taking it off when she is lonely. It is colorless like the other items around her since it is limiting her action and causing her sadness. By dripping the black paint, I made it look like the mask is crying as well, which represents how she is not being able to hide her emotions anymore, and how it is reflecting on her mask.
